OBI’s Future Focus
As part of OBI’s new vision, it will focus much of its future effort on the continent of Africa. We worked for 18 years in Ukraine and will continue to do so but our future “center-of-gravity” will be in Africa. Several new projects are now in the final planning stages. We have been blessed to have these opportunities.
In 2010, we provided a basic training program for 175 Chaplains and Chaplain Assistants working in the military, and government first-responder organizations. In addition we initially established a micro-enterprise program to train war widows in basic sowing skills.
In 2013 in support of Greatest Goal Ministries, www.greatestgoalministreis.org , we will train chaplains for the newly opened Lady Deborah Berewa Hospital in the area of Lakka, just outside of Freetown. This hospital has opened with the direct support of the First Lady of Sierra Leone, Her Excellency Sia Koroma. Based on agreement with Greatest Goal, we jointly planning this as a long-term mission for training and support that will expand throughout Sierra Leone.
Similar to our work in Cherkassy, Ukraine, we hope this hospital will serve as the future center for training of chaplains throughout the country.
We recently received a formal request from the government of South Sudan to train chaplains for their military. We were blessed that the government is willing to entrust us with such training. We are planning an initial assessment visit and several days of chaplain “basic” as groundwork for a long-term commitment to the country of South Sudan in June 2013.
